The Challenge.

Digital gaming is competitive by nature, and investments are normally directed at professional gamers and the industry and community that has grown around it: Twitch, ESports, Overwatch, Guilded, Dreamhack Masters, etc. Indy Gaming League wanted to build a platform for the community of amateur recreational gamers. Their goal is to create an engaging, inviting, and exciting environment for competitive and recreational gamers. Platforms like this face difficult initial engagement, retention, and a user base that largely has an existing life style that may pull them away from using the platform consistently.

The client built an MVP web application from scratch and had been running the league manually through emails, Discord communication, and spreadsheets. Ultimately, many of their challenges came down to scalability of the product, updating their application branding, and engaging new & existing users with information crucial to the benefit of signing up for a paid membership. Being able to allow the platform to do most of the heavy lifting, having a consistent up-to-date brand style, and getting users and teams the information they need to set up schedules in a timely manner needed to be simple and easily digestible by the gamers.

The Solution.

Helping our client find impactful solutions meant working closely with the main stakeholders, developers, and their marketing team. By understanding how potential solutions impacted multiple areas of the product, we were able to deliver quickly and avoid potential pitfalls and tech debt.

  • Simplifying existing site map and workflows for users.

  • Update the visual branding and output.

  • Making key information available for non-members to understand the benefit of a paid membership.

  • Implementing features that empower players to view and understand their statistics, team information, and upcoming schedule.

  • Implementing in design future features that allow players more advanced benefits, social communication, and capabilities.

Based on these objectives, we designed a roadmap focused on business needs and positive player impact. At the core of this strategy was a web and mobile application that allowed players to: sign up, join a team, be recruited by a team, set their schedule, and access all critical information in a secure way no matter where they were.

The Results.

In 2019, Indy Gaming League was aiming at getting 1,000 users on boarded to their platform. For the 2020 spring circuit, their goal is aimed at nearly 2,000 teams. A nearly 800% increase for a community of amateur recreational gamers. An updated version of the platform was built within 3 months, with continuous updates since.
