A legacy system needing a fresh start.
Collaborating closely with the product and development teams at FARRAR, our mission was to evaluate the existing application, identify key pain points, and propose a more intuitive, streamlined user experience. This involved not only rethinking core interaction patterns but also addressing usability challenges specific to the environment — from gloved hands and safety glasses to hardware limitations that impacted both performance and update workflows.
Equally important was the opportunity to bring visual and structural consistency to the interface. The product had grown organically over time, resulting in fragmented design patterns and a lack of cohesive branding. By incorporating updated brand standards and building a scalable design system, we aimed to deliver a modern interface that aligned with the company’s evolving identity — while remaining practical and feasible for development within the constraints of the legacy hardware.
The Solution.
The solution centered around designing an end-user-focused application that supports daily workflows, improves comprehension of real-time data, and simplifies interaction in complex environments. Every design decision was made with the end user's context in mind — ensuring that key information was easy to access, touch targets were optimized for gloved hands, and interface elements remained legible in less-than-ideal visual conditions.
To support future growth and consistency, we built a comprehensive UI kit from the ground up. This design system established a clear visual language, defined reusable components, and aligned closely with the updated brand standards. It not only addressed the immediate needs of the current application but also provided a solid foundation for future features and product iterations. By designing with scalability in mind, we ensured that the interface could evolve with the product, while remaining intuitive, cohesive, and maintainable across development cycles.
The Results.
Through comprehensive stakeholder interviews, extensive research, and the integration of industry best practices in digital interface design, the client received a UI Kit library featuring a wide array of components matching their brand. Furthermore, we revamped the user experience flows, providing meticulously documented design files to facilitate seamless development and implementation.
